Young Stars Collide in Toronto Tonight

The Toronto Maple Leafs meet the New York Islanders on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto is playing its second game in two nights after opening the season against Montréal, while New York is starting its year on the road.

The biggest draw is the first NHL meeting between Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer, the top picks in the 2026 and 2025 drafts. The outcome, though, will likely depend just as much on Toronto’s proven scorers and whether the Islanders can produce enough offense in front of Ilya Sorokin.

Toronto’s top names to follow

  • Gavin McKenna: The 18-year-old rookie is expected to begin his NHL career with John Tavares and William Nylander, which gives him high-end support right away. His early shifts in the offensive zone will be worth watching, especially if he can create space and move the puck quickly.
  • Auston Matthews: Toronto’s most reliable finisher remains the player most likely to punish any defensive focus on McKenna’s line. One clean look could be enough for Matthews to swing a tight game.
  • William Nylander: Nylander’s skating and passing make him a key part of Toronto’s attack, and his chemistry with McKenna and Tavares could matter most if the Leafs need a late goal.

Islanders who can change the game

  • Matthew Schaefer: The reigning Calder Trophy winner brings skill at both ends of the ice and should be central to New York’s transition game. He was held out of the final preseason game with an upper-body issue, so his status deserves attention.
  • Ilya Sorokin: If he starts, Sorokin may be the Islanders’ best chance to steal the opener. He led the league in high-danger saves last season and can keep New York alive even if Toronto controls the shot count.
  • Bo Horvat: Horvat is the Islanders’ most established scorer after finishing with 31 goals in 68 games last season. Toronto will need to keep him away from prime scoring areas, especially on special teams.

The final lineup question and the edge

Mathew Barzal remains a major variable for New York after being placed on the injured non-roster list because of a knee issue. He was expected to travel with the team and had not been ruled out, so his availability could shift the Islanders’ offensive ceiling.

Toronto holds a slight advantage because it is at home and has more established scoring depth. Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, and McKenna give the Maple Leafs several ways to create offense, even on a night when energy could be a concern after playing the previous evening.

New York still has a path if Sorokin is sharp, Horvat finishes chances, and Schaefer helps limit Toronto’s time in the attacking zone. If Barzal suits up, that balance becomes even more difficult to predict.

Prediction: Maple Leafs win a close one.
